Whare KŌhanga

‘The Nest’

3months to 2yr’s

Here in Whare KŌhanga we value respect for diversity, for Papatuanuku (the land), our natural world and Te Ao Maori.

We believe in providing an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and a feeling of whanuangatanga (connection), where tamariki (children), whānau (family) and kaiako (teacher) are partners in learning.

We strive for authentic engagement with whānau , places and things within our environment and wider world. Our goal is to empower our tamariki to become global citizens - adaptive, creative, resilient and confident to know their contributions are valued.

We take a holistic view of our tamariki, nurturing and responding meaningfully to their interests, strengths and abilities, while building on their exisiting understandings, working theories and dispositions.

Tamariki are offered the opportunity to develop and feel aroha, compassion, trust, kindness and respect in a calm environment, tailored to their individual needs.

In order to achieve this Whare KŌhanga has a 3 week settling process. We feel that this time allows connections to be established between tamariki, kaiako and whānau. The building of these relationships strengthens trust and confidence within the Whare.

Our online learning platform; Educa is used by kaiako to share learning stories and photos with you of what your tamaiti (child) has been up to. Each tamaiti in the preschool is assigned a profile kaiako who will encourage and observe learning oppportunities. Stories and photos are shared online through links allowing whānau and friends locally and further afield to keep up to date with your tamaiti learning journey.

  • Nurturing Environment

Specifically designed for our youngest tamariki Whare Kohanga provides a calm, friendly, welcoming space. Tamariki are actively encouraged and supported to explore their own indoor and outdoor space.

  • Outdoor Play

Whare Kohanga has its own outdoor area where tamariki are encouraged to safely explore.

  • Sleep Room

Whare Kohanga has its own sleep room offering both cot and stretcher bed options. Tamariki are checked at least every 10 minutes and all under 1 year old’s have a sleep movement monitor in their cot. To ensure your tamariki feel safe in our sleep space the kaiako will endeavour to support your tamariki sleep routines.
